Coming from the rich clay loam soils of an old California chenin blanc site, this brightly lifted wine gives nuanced notes of quince, apple, and stone fruits with a weighted foundation provided by a delicate barrel influence.
A striking bouquet of intricate tropical flavors and the stunning floral aromatics of the 2018 sauvignon blanc produce a uniquely decadent expression of the varietal.
Our custom barrel-fermentation, adapted from winemaker Jesse Katz's experience at Haut Brion in Bordeaux, creates a distinct richness on the palate that is balanced by the varietal's quintessential bright, natural acidity.
Named for the traveling adventurer, Nomad embraces the unexpected. This wine is driven entirely by the vineyard, chosen by Winemaker Jesse Katz as the best representation of the vintage and is never repeated. The 2016 Nomad is a merlot blend that demonstrates an authentic strength and deeply refined beauty.
This smooth and rich cabernet, a mix of Clone 337 and Clone 7, in just its first release already boasts an impressive pedigree. Its fruit hails exclusively from SJ Ranch Vineyard, a 7.9-acre parcel at the top of Chalk Hill, directly adjacent to the legendary Verité vineyards on Thomas Road.
Out of the seven vineyard blocks at SJ Ranch, only three were selected in 2016 for this site-specific wine. The resulting offering is a dark-fruit mix of wild berries and cassis on the palate, lifted by hints of fresh flowers on the nose. The current bottling marks the first-ever release of this wine. It is an example of naturally stunning terroir from a remarkable vintage.
There is a reason this was the first vineyard that started the Aperture site-specific portfolio. Oliver Ranch, planted by the viticulture legend, Phil Freese, is a pristine example of precise vineyard planning and how that shapes the resulting wine. These vines are perfectly suited to the exact home in which they have flourished.
Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, but enhanced with the delicate complexity of 11% barrel-fermented Cabernet Franc, this single vineyard blend accomplishes a uniquely refined balance.
Aperture's expression of the Del Rio Vineyard site shows defined fruit with a subtle layer of delicate florals that gains in concentration and complexity and is held with well-structured tannins. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this distinctive wine carries with it a profound sense of place.
Four hillside cabernet vineyard sites, all with mineral-rich volcanic soils, are always the first focus of this blend. In 2016, our Merlot harvest was particularly incredible, yielding stunning acidity with full and silky tannins. It was a perfect partner to the vivid fruit profile of our Alexander Valley cabernet vineyards. This year's blend, 93% cabernet, 7% merlot, achieves an uncommon, sophisticated balance.
Creating the Aperture Red Blend is one of winemaker Jesse Katz's favorite times to engage his creativity and allow the different vineyard lots to guide him. The 2016 blend beautifully demonstrates what we are always looking to achieve, a focused tension between the fruit's expansive power and nuanced elegance.
